Apr 15, 2024
Quick Summary: 30-Day Stickhandling Transformation System
This 30-day plan gives players a complete off-ice stickhandling system. You’ll follow weekly progressions that build puck feel, fakes, vision, air skills, and shooting under pressure.
- 3 structured sessions per week (about 20–30 minutes each)
- Weekly focus: puck feel, deception, movement shooting, vision
- Clear progressions and variations to keep players challenged
- Perfect for driveways, basements, or garages—no ice required
Follow the system for 30 days to build faster hands, better puck control, and more confidence with the puck.
30-Day Stickhandling Transformation Plan for Hockey Players
A complete four-week off-ice system to build elite puck control, deception, and shooting—one session at a time.
With the right plan, 30 days is enough to see a massive jump in your stickhandling. The key is simple: short, focused sessions that build on each other week after week.
This 30-day stickhandling transformation system is designed just like the progressions I use inside Online Hockey Training. You’ll go from basic puck feel to advanced fakes, vision drills, air skills, and shooting under pressure.
How to use this program:
- Train 3 times per week for 4 weeks.
- Each session: 5 minutes of shooting + 2 main drills + variations.
- Take short breaks between reps to avoid fatigue and bad habits.
- Keep each drill to 2–3 sets and no more than 12–15 shots at a time.
Let’s break down your 30-day stickhandling transformation week by week.
Week 1: Build Puck Feel & Basic Vision
Week 1 is all about getting comfortable with the puck on your blade and beginning to look up while handling it. The goal is to make the puck feel “lighter” and more controlled.
Drill 1 – Puck-on-Stick Control
Goal: Develop natural feel for the puck on your blade.
How to do it (5–10 minutes):
- Place a puck on the ground in front of you.
- Use the outside edge of your blade to press one side of the puck.
- Flip it onto the face of your blade and catch it in control.
- Set it back down and repeat using the inside edge of your blade.
Variations:
- Dribble first, then use puck momentum to scoop it onto your blade.
- Flip the puck across your body and catch it on the opposite side.
- Catch the puck on the shaft of your stick before dropping and repeating.
Drill 2 – Cool Cupping Vision Drill
Goal: Improve stickhandling while training your eyes to scan, not stare at the puck.
Setup & pattern:
- Place pucks in two vertical lines with space between them.
- Stand between the lines.
- Snap a puck between the first two pucks on your backhand side.
- Use your forehand to drag it back around the first puck and into the middle.
- Repeat on the forehand side using your backhand to drag it back.
- Move up the “lane” in a figure-eight motion.
- At the end of the lane, snap the puck to your forehand and shoot.
Progressions:
- Look up every second or third touch instead of staring at the puck.
- Add more pucks to the lines to make space tighter.
- Skate or shuffle backward through the pattern.
Week 2: Fakes, Deception & Dangler Control
In Week 2, we layer in more deception. You’ll learn to sell fakes and control the puck through obstacles so defenders bite while you keep full control.
Drill 3 – Front Fake Attack
Goal: Learn to sell a shot fake without losing the puck.
How to do it:
- Dribble a quick 1–2 on your forehand.
- Snap the puck across your body to the backhand.
- Drop your shoulder and look at your “fake” target as if shooting.
- Pull the puck back to the far forehand side and reset.
Progressions:
- Add a real shot after the fake.
- Pass the puck between your legs and shoot from the opposite side.
- Carry forward toward the net instead of staying in place.
- Use a double fake before you shoot.
Drill 4 – Dangler Line Control
Goal: Improve puck control while navigating obstacles.
Setup & pattern:
- Set a dangler in a horizontal line a few feet in front of the net.
- Start at one end and dribble up and down the line.
- Pass the puck under the dangler while your stick jumps over.
- Finish each rep with a shot on goal.
Progressions:
- Add a second or third row of danglers.
- Pop the puck over some obstacles instead of under them.
- Use your feet to kick the puck through every third gap before grabbing it again.
Week 3: Shooting in Motion & Tight Control
Week 3 connects stickhandling and shooting. You’ll learn to control the puck through obstacles and release shots while it’s moving.
Drill 5 – Slip-and-Rip Shot
Goal: Shoot quickly off a moving puck instead of stopping it first.
How to do it:
- Place a dangler or small obstacle in front of your shooting area.
- Pass the puck under the obstacle.
- As it comes out the other side, meet it with your blade.
- Release your shot immediately while the puck is still sliding.
Progressions:
- Do the pattern using only your backhand.
- Add dangler dribbles before your pass-and-shoot.
- Change distance and angle on each rep.
Drill 6 – Toe–Heel Control Lane
Goal: Gain complete control of the puck on the toe and heel of your blade.
Setup & pattern:
- Place four pucks in a straight line in front of your shooting area.
- Stand on the forehand side.
- Pass a puck between the first two pucks.
- Catch it on the toe of your blade and drag it back to the start.
- Move up the line, repeating the pattern at each gap.
- Finish each rep with a forehand scoop shot.
Progressions:
- Use an opposite-handed stick for more challenge.
- Complete the full pattern on your backhand.
- Add a fake before your final shot.
- Run the entire lane backwards.
Week 4: Vision, Shoulder Checks & Air Skills
Week 4 ties everything together: vision, deception, air control, and finishing touch. This is where your hands really start to feel different.
Drill 7 – Side-Step Shoulder Check
Goal: Handle the puck while scanning and adjusting your body position.
How to do it:
- Stand sideways to the net with the puck in front of you.
- Side-step toward the net while constantly dribbling.
- Alternate looking over each shoulder with every step.
- Return to your starting spot, square up, and shoot.
Progressions:
- Try the drill with an opposite-handed stick.
- Side-step all the way behind the net and use a power step out to shoot.
- Add danglers to step over and dribble through.
- Pop the puck over a dangler while side-stepping.
Drill 8 – Pop-Up Batting Finish
Goal: Take your hand–eye coordination and air control to the next level.
How to do it:
- Use the forehand toe of your blade to pull the puck toward you.
- Scoop it onto the blade and pop it into the air.
- Catch it, pop it again, then bat it toward the net out of mid-air.
Progressions:
- Pop the puck five times before batting it toward the net.
- Aim for specific corners (high glove, low blocker, etc.).
- Repeat the sequence on your backhand.

FAQs: 30-Day Stickhandling Transformation
What age is this 30-day plan best for?
Most youth and teen players can follow it, but the drills also challenge older players when progressions are added.
How long should each session last?
Most sessions take 20–30 minutes, including shots and variations. Short and focused is the goal.
Can I repeat the plan more than once?
Yes. Many players run it back-to-back, using harder progressions each time.
Do I need special equipment?
No. A stick, a few pucks, a net or target, and a dangler or small obstacles are enough to get started.
Can I use this alongside team practices?
Absolutely. This plan is designed to fit around games and practices as an off-ice supplement.
